All you need to do is open the Registry Editor by clicking the Start button, choosing Run, and typing Regedit in the Open text box.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop and double-click on the AutoEndTasks value. Change the Value Data to 1, and then click OK. Next, open the WaitToKillAppTimeout value and change the Value Data to the number of milliseconds you want XP to wait before terminating the unresponsive application. Then, click OK.
Caution Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause data loss or even operating system failure. Be careful when directly editing the registry.
